History

According to Jinaprabha (Vividhatirthakalpa, p.86) It was a tirtha sacred to Vira or Lord Vardhamana Mahavira. The form Palli is found in that text and and also KB (p.1). In the epigraphs, from this place, we have the form Pallika and Pali. The earliest inscription from this place is dated V.S. 1144 (1087 AD), which proves that it was built before that date. This epigraph and two other epigraphs mention Viranatha or Mahavira chaitya of the place. In 17th century this temple was converted to shrine dedicated to Parshva and was given the name of Navalakha. The Palli or Pallivala gachchha of the Shvetambaras originated from this place. [3]

During the Kushana Age, King Kanishka had conquered Rohat and Jaitaran area, parts of today's Pali district, in 120 AD. During the middle of seventh century A. D. this area was ruled by King Harshavardhana along with other parts of the present state of Rajasthan . During the period from 10th to 15th century, boundaries of Pali extended to adjoining Mewar, Godwad and Marwar. Nadol was the capital of Chauhans. After the defeat of Prithviraj Chauhan, against Mohammed Gauri, the Rajput power of the area was disintegrated. Godwad area of Pali become the subjects of then ruler of Mewar, Maharana Kumbha.
